5 Fun Summer Day Trips Near Charlton, Massachusetts

Here at The Overlook, our residents often ask for suggestions for great activities near Charlton, Massachusetts, that seniors can enjoy as day trips. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorites, so you can check them out as well! All these fun locales are within a few hours’ drive of The Overlook. Enjoy!

New England’s Largest Urban Wildlife Center

In nearby Worcester, just a 30-minute drive away, is a true gem: Broad Meadow Brook. New England’s largest wildlife sanctuary in an urban area, Broad Meadow Brook occupies more than 400 acres that span streams, woods, fields and marsh areas. The 5 miles of trails are well-marked, and you won’t want to miss the Sensory Trail — featuring a butterfly garden and a bird blind for watching birds at feeders as you listen to their calls. Feel free to bring the grandkids along for this fun day trip!

Guided Tour of Boston

Boston is only about one hour away via Interstate 90, and you can easily see the city with a day trip. To make sure you take a gander at all the city’s highlights, you can consider a guided day tour. If you decide to go it alone, mark a map with all the must-see spots, including the Boston Public Garden, the Museum of Fine Arts, the historic North End neighborhood, the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, and Fenway Park. This would be a fine day trip for taking along older grandchildren, but it would be a long day for little ones.

New York City Sightseeing

If you’re feeling adventurous and want to head even a little farther from Charlton, consider a day trip to the Big Apple. It’s about a three-hour drive via interstates 84 and 95, so be prepared for a very long day. To leave the driving to someone else — and enjoy some additional nap time — consider a day tour in an air-conditioned motor coach. Whether you go with a group or on your own, be sure to see the iconic sights, including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Times Square.

A Living Look at History

Much closer to Charlton — just 15 minutes away, in fact — you can experience a living, vibrant village that illustrates life in 19th-century New England. At Old Sturbridge Village, you’ll be entertained and enlightened by costumed historians. You also can tour some three dozen “antique” buildings, including a school, a country store and mills powered only by water. You can participate in tasks of the time, including dipping candles, learning to plow a field, and assisting the blacksmith, potter and printer. This is a great day trip for taking the grandchildren along.

A Day at the Lake

For this day trip, you won’t travel very far at all, but you’ll feel that you’ve entered a different world. Buffumville Lake is actually in Charlton, but you’ll want to allow plenty of time to enjoy the natural environment. The 200-acre lake features bike jumps along with a 27-hole disc golf course, mountain biking trails, fishing, boating and hunting — activities adored by nature-lovers of all ages.
